Asus cut out around 130MB from 246 to 260, that's weird!

That's because in recent releases, they would include a lot of binary blobs from other routers. Now they improved their GPL bundling a bit, so for example, the RT-AC66U binary blobs are no longer included with the RT-N66U archive. They also removed the RT-N12U binary blobs. They now also include the prebuilt binaries that had been missing from the past few GPL releases (I had to recover those missing files from their firmware binary releases to plug those holes).

So does this mean we will be seeing another Merlin build soon, based on the new 260 sources and with the new radio driver?

Build 260 does not have a new driver - it's still the same driver as in 246. Therefore, Asuswrt-Merlin 260.21 for the RT-N66U will remain on the build 220 driver, which has proven more stable.

No change regardrding the RT-AC66U driver, still the same as the past few months.
