Default Drive Replacement Question

This is probably a dumb question but here is goes.

When planning for future drive failure (and replacement) do you need to use the exact same model?
I'm about to buy a new NAS and was thinking, in a few years that same model drive probable won't be available. What do most people do? Do they buy spares in advance?
