Had been thinking about a synology or QNAP but looking at an ATOM self build looks to be a cost effective option.

The MSI Wind sounds like a good option rather than buying board/case seperate. My trouble is finding it in the UK.

Has anyone been able to get hold of one in the UK - importing from the US would be OK except trying to find someone who will ship and also not charge as much as the Wind itself appears to be next to impossible...

Have a look at the BBS2 model here (http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/) its pretty competitive with price of a self-build. I just got one myself.

And if you only need one drive, then their T7 barebones model is even cheaper and totally silent. You cant build anything like that yourself for less than 2x or 3x their price.

Default Wind PC using CF - how is the performance

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a windpic on a single 1tb wd hard disk.
I also installed XMBC and am able to view videos on my large screen tv.
I am not getting the NAS performance quoted at this site but still pretty good.

Q. I was wondering how well it works when installed on a CF card. Is the performance
comparable to HD install assuming that the swap is still on the HD.
Further, with periodic access-time updates do the CF cards last?

A couple of pages back there was a question of whether Windows Home Server would work on an Atom, the answer is yes. Unluckily, the reports of using this as a media streamer have been negative, the demigrator issue seems to cause difficulties ( stuttering ).
