I'm sorry I meant the first drive(i must have fat fingers), i know the data would be lost on the second hd. I bought a brand new hd that matches my existing drives. I wanted to install, configure, and setup the first drive in the NAS; then copy my data to it; then insert the second (existing) drive and setup the raid 1. What i didn't know was if the DS209 would wipe the first hd when setting up the raid 1. I have looked on their wiki pages and believe I can in fact do it that way.
the existing hd's are in a raid 1 array in my pc (data backed up to ext usb and carbonite). so if it all goes to heck during the process, I should be able to recover.
sorry for the confusion
