router upgrade advice

Hi Guys,
I require some help with buying a new router for my partners business network.

The network has a server, 7 PC's (running XP pro), 2 network printers, a CCTV digital recorder.

the reason fopr the router upgrade is we are using all the 12 port redirection on our present Router (Dlink DSL-504)

The port forwarding is being used up on PC anywhere on the server and the main adminstators pc, mail sever and the connectoion onto the CCTV digitasl recorder.

asny advice will be appreciated.

A Linksys RV042 or Sonicwall TZ-180 would be a nice upgrade to a more business-class'y device. Some more features, a little sturdier, slightly easier to manage firewall rules depending on model.

look at the Zyxel Zywall series.

You may be able to get by with a Zywall 2plus. Or look at the Zywall5UTM or USG series based on your needs.

Zyxel provides lifetime firmware upgrades at no charge. If you want the content filtering or UTM capabilities you'll pay a subscription for them (like everyone else). Try getting free firmware upgrades (or support) from Sonicwall.

I second the RV0 series....great bang for the buck. Solid stable router in my experience..have dozens of them out in service. If you're just using a 100 meg switch..the RV016 would allow you to dump the switch and plug everything into the router.

If you have alot of NAT going on Try The netgear FVS336G. You will have to use an extra Switch But it handles multi-Nat configurations Nicely.

Maybe you could just buy something cheap like a Linksys WRT54GL, put OpenWRT on it, and connect your server, CCTV recorder and existing router to it. Then keep the Windows PCs and printers connected to your existing router. This way if any of the PCs become compromised, they won't be able to attack your server as easily, or mess with your CCTV.

I really advice against using openwrt or any of those open source firmware. Although I absolutely love them and respect everything they stand for they (IMO) are not business grade firmwares. If something goes wrong there is no support line to call, your router warranty will be voided because you have to solder on additional memory to support some of the bigger firmwares. On top of that I highly doubt a wrt anything can handle server traffic.
