Is this device noisy? It looks like a solid choice to replace an aging PC server, but I want something fairly quite.

I have the QNAP TS-409 Turbo Pro loaded with 4 drives (RAID). I've found it to be very quiet.
The system fan speeds up when you're using all the drives, but powers down to slow speed when you're not.
Drives go into stand-by mode automatically when not used to 1/2 hour (you can set this).
Not the same exact unit ... but I thought it might be useful... since it's from the same manufacturer.

It's very quiet with 5 drives. The Dlink 1216 switch (fan) is deafening in comparison.

TS-509 Pro: http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_hardware.asp?p_id=104
Standby: 34.2 dB
In operation: 41.2dB
PS: 33dB is what we got from the fanless TS-101/109 series.

It also depends on the noise of the HDDs and where you want to put the TS-509.
I have a TS-509 and think that it's not noisy. The fan is pretty big and doesn't have an annoying high pitch sound. You rather hear the sound of the airflow. Please also note that the fan adjusts speed depending on the system temperature. Noise is not an issue.
