Hi

Iīm thinking in my first NAS and I donīt know what to do.

The "easy" option is getting a QNAP 509, but I can recicle a HP dc-7100 (Pentium IV 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM) and if I add a SATA Raid controller, letīs say Adaptec 5805, I think I will get best performance.

What do you think? Am I crazy?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I wouldn't say that you are crazy. It depends on your needs.
A NAS will use less power, however. And where will you put the drives?

A NAS will use less power, however. And where will you put the drives?

The main use will be store files and share it between 4 computers at home. The main advantage is that I can use up to 8 disks in the adaptec instead the 5 in the Qnap.

In the HP I think I can install 5 drives without problem, but if I want to use all the capabilities of the adaptec I must change the box.

Another point is the price, here in Europe I can find the Adaptec in 400€ and the qnap 509 is imposible to find it under 700 € (without disks)

In the HP who will be the bottleneck? The CPU? Or the Adaptec is capable to do everything?

Thanks in advance.

You sure you want a P4 box as NAS? I use mine as a space heater. :D
