I need advice - Home Network

I am trying to finalise my home networking setup and I would like to get some advice from the user community. My home is two floors, plus basement. I currently have 4 computers, 2 laptops (Intel 4965AGN wireless card), 1 G5 iMac and a Dell PC. I have installed structured wiring throughout the home (2X cat5e & cat6 plus 2X coax). I plan on adding a NAS soon and eventually full media streaming (hence Cat6).

I have opted for a Netgear Prosafe GS524 Gig switch to maximise my home network. However, the laptops, when not directly connected, will require wireless networking. I was thinking of getting the Airport Express because it is easy to configure as an access point only and, well..., it will look really good in a central location like the kitchen.

I am currently struggling to figure what router I should use. I have a first generation Linksys BESFR41 that is fine with my current 7Mbps cable broadband service but I would like to upgrade to 30Mbps. Because my incoming wiring is in the basement, I dont want nor need a need a router'that has wireless doodads.

My internet usage is pretty standard, no torrenting or p2p.

Is there a good, simple wired router to recommend? VPN functionality would be nice to have, but not mandatory.

Don't rule out wireless routers. That is what most manufacturers are producing today. You can always shut off the wireless and you are not paying much of a price premium with an 802.11g router.
